Why most hats don't fit big heads
Two things determine whether a hat fits a larger head, and only one of them is the strap.
Circumference is the easy one. That's what the snapback, rope closure, or adjustable strap handles. Run it out far enough and the hat will technically close around your head.
Crown depth is the one nobody talks about, and it's the one that actually ruins the fit. Crown depth is how far down the hat sits from the top of the crown to the sweatband. A shallow crown can be strapped out to any circumference you want and it will still ride high, because there's simply no room inside it. That's the hat that sits on your head instead of down around it where it belongs. It's also the hat that leaves the red line, because the whole load is riding on a narrow band across your forehead instead of being spread across the inside of the crown.
So when a hat is advertised as "one size fits most" and it doesn't fit you, this is almost always why. The strap had room. The crown didn't.
How to figure out your hat size
You don't need anything fancy. Take a soft tape measure — or a piece of string and a ruler — and wrap it around your head about where a hat would naturally sit: roughly a finger's width above your eyebrows and just above your ears. Keep it level all the way around. Snug, not squeezing.
Read the number in inches. That's your head circumference. Rough guide:
- 23 inches — about a size 7 ⅜
- 23½ inches — about a size 7 ½
- 24 inches — about a size 7 ⅝
- 24½ inches — about a size 7 ¾
- 25 inches — about a size 8

What to look for in a hat built for a bigger head
A deep crown. This is the whole ballgame. The hat needs vertical room, not just horizontal room. A deep crown sits down on your head, spreads the pressure, and stops the perching.
A closure with real range. A rope closure or snapback that still has notches left when the hat fits means you're not maxed out — and that matters, because a strap at its absolute limit is a strap that digs in.
Structure that holds its shape. A hat with a structured front panel keeps the crown standing up instead of collapsing down onto your forehead. Collapsed crowns are how a hat that measured fine still ends up feeling tight.
Breathability. A bigger head means more surface area under the hat. If you're on a tractor, walking a course, sitting in a blind, or standing in the sun on the water, you want a hat that isn't holding heat against you all day.

Getting the fit dialed in
Once the hat is on, it should sit down on your head with the brim roughly level and the sweatband resting just above your ears — not clamped across your forehead. If the hat is sitting high, the crown is too shallow, and no amount of strap adjustment will fix it.
A hat that fits properly should feel like it's resting on your head rather than gripping it. You should be able to look down, lean over a fence, bend into a truck bed, or take a swing without reaching up to catch it — and you shouldn't be thinking about it at all. That's the test. If you're aware you're wearing a hat, it doesn't fit.
